NHS Wales - Palliative and End of Life Programme
Services offered
The National Palliative and End of Life Care (PEoLC) Programme for Wales works to ensure that everyone with palliative and end of life care needs receives high-quality, equitable, and person-centred care wherever they live and whatever their diagnosis. Guided by the Welsh Government Quality Statement (2022) the programme brings together NHS Wales, hospices, social care, and third-sector partners to strengthen community-based care, improve early identification, Future Care Planning, reduce inequity, and support sustainable workforce. Alongside the important digital development. It also leads national work on data, commissioning, bereavement support, and value-based resource use to ensure care aligns with what matters most to people and their families, now and into the future
How SPICT is being used
Through the consistent use of SPICT™, across Wales we aim to promote timely recognition, proactive planning, and person-centred care for individuals approaching the end of life.
We highlight SPICT™ as a structured clinical prompt to guide professional judgement and decision-making, ensuring consistent identification for palliative care.
Other information
The National Palliative and End of Life care Programme provides national leadership and support and acts as a forum to drive forward change and oversee health boards’ efforts to deliver the Welsh Government’s vision for improving end of life care in Wales.
This is our vision for palliative and end of life care delivered in Wales for all who need it by people working closely together, at home when appropriate, determined by what matters to the person and underpinned by what works.
We want people to be able to end their days in the location of their choice, be that home, hospital or hospice and we want them to have access to high quality care wherever they live and die, whatever their underlying disease or disability.
