Section of Supportive, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, University of the Philippines-Philippines General Hospital - Manila
Services Offered
The Supportive, Hospice and Palliative Medicine (SHPM) Section of UP–PGH is the first government tertiary hospital in the country to offer dedicated palliative care services and a clinical fellowship training program for specialists. It provides a full continuum of care through its inpatient hospice and palliative care ward, outpatient clinic, home-based services, and interdepartmental consultation service, ensuring comprehensive symptom management, follow-up, and end-of-life support. Its holistic approach includes pain and symptom relief, psychosocial and spiritual support, advance care planning, and coordinated continuity of care for patients and families. As the national academic centre for hospice and palliative medicine, SHPM also leads fellowship training, research, service evaluation, capacity-building, and community outreach efforts, including strengthening networks of providers and expanding access to home and community-based palliative care across the country.
SPICT Uses
The SHPM Section of UP–PGH incorporates the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT) as an important framework for identifying patients who may benefit from palliative care. SPICT is taught to medical students and volunteers during their SHPM rotations to guide early recognition of clinical deterioration. Through the new Filipino translation (SPICT-LIS-PH) will be promoted among its partner communities and broader UP-PGH healthcare teams, making the tool more accessible and culturally attuned. This expanded use supports SHPM’s goal of strengthening early palliative care identification both in the hospital and at the community level.

Western Visayas Medical Center - Iloilo
We offer Geriatric palliative care in acute, opd and community settings.
SPICT Uses
Screening for Palliative Care Needs:
- We could use SPICT to identify patients with general indicators of poor health and specific clinical signs of life-shortening conditions.
- It would help us recognize patients who may require a palliative care review and discussions about their care priorities.
Advance Care Planning:
- SPICT facilitates conversations about advance care directives, resuscitation plans, and preferred place of care.
- It encourages early discussions about what matters most to patients and their families.
Integration into Routine Practice:
- SPICT can be used to ensure timely identification of patients with unmet palliative care needs.
